CELEBRATING 25 YEARS IN PADDINGTON

COLLECTOR’S CHOICE, 1978-2003
1st JUNE - 17th JULY, 2003

Arthur Boyd, Jinker on a Sandbank - 1987, Oil on Canvas, 122 x 153cm

Since opening the gallery in Paddington in 1978, Shirley Wagner has been an ambassador for the refined and unique Australian Visual Arts, promoting them to the rest of the world and in turn, has brought many overseas exhibitions to Sydney. The most recent being the American Graphics exhibition which included works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Sam Francis and Christo.

It was always a passion to travel Asia and she took many exhibitions by Blackman, Nolan and Arthur Boyd to New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo establishing a full time gallery in Hong Kong for over 10 years, the first and only gallery of its kind aimed to provide a gateway to exposing Australian Art to the rest of the world.

Wagner Art Gallery's exhibitions are testament to the great wealth of talent and variety of work from late 20th Century Australian artists. Exhibiting together are a wide variety of arists such as: the traditionalists; the moderns; the abstracts; emerging artits with future promise; the contemporaries and the indigenous artists of Central and Western Australia, all of whom have contributed to the expression of imagination and a deeper understanding of life and the world around us.

Represented in Wagner Art Gallery’s first Collector’s Choice Exhibition in June of 1978 were the following artists:
Sidney Nolan, Robert Dickerson, James Gleeson
Charles Blackman, Ray Crooke, Donald Friend
Arthur Boyd, Pro Hart, Arthur Murch, Susan Sheridan
Sir Russell Drysdale, David Boyd and Margaret Coen

Through our solid commitment to the Arts, 25 years later these artists and many more important Australian painters have been represented consistently and with enthusiastic commitment by Wagner Art Gallery, which is one of Sydney’s leading private fine art galleries holding monthly exhibitions by Australia’s most notable artists whose works are in increasingly high demand.

This celebratory exhibition echoes the significance of fine Australian paintings today and represents in Collector's Choice 2003 the same artsits who exhibited in Collector's Choice 1978.
