The Dawdler, Oil on Canvas, 112 x 138cm

Mike Worralls’ paintings are immediately recognisable. They can be likened to a medieval Magritte – absurd, surreal and alluring. By combining contemporary concepts with historical content, Mike Worrall evokes a compelling view into an enchanting, dramatic and mysterious world – that of his unrestrained imagination of women and interiors.

The Creation Series

2nd - 29th March 2007

Creation 5 - In a time between oceans, Oil on Canvas, 137 x 137cm

“I call this new series of works Creation because they concentrate on notions of Revelation, Genesis, Time and Timelessness.  Sometimes they use creation myths as their starting point – cosmic elements like stars and sunlight and fire and water thrown into an Original Soup.  At other times they use a dreamlike juxtaposition of separate times as a symbol of Endlessnessism.  Or they use emergence from mist or darkness for their symbolism.  Mostly these are central devices to 17th–19th Century European Painting or to Chinese Landscape painting from over a millennium ago.

I don’t normally work with a Series as a motivation for painting – in the past it’s normally been focussed on the most interesting things that seemed to come my way. I think that this current body of work is the result of being able to see in hindsight what some of those steps were and to take them to a new level.”.
