Robert Juniper, "The View From Above" - by Dr Garry Darby

SOLD The Day of the Dragon Fly, Oil & Acrylic on Belgian Linen, 182 x 244cm

Media mogul Kerry Stoke’s curator John Stringer, defines Juniper as ‘the youngest of the figurative generation, which includes Nolan, Tucker, Boyd & Fred Williams, all of whom were inspired by indigenous landscape and developed signature styles based on a high degree of stylisation.  Juniper is a fiercely disciplined draftsman and his brilliant control of descriptive outline brings a feeling of great elegance and authority to his work.

In 2004, Janet Holmes a Courts private art gallery assembled a retrospective of Junipers work including 8 acquisitions for her family collection.”  The Australian 24/03/04

Juniper is a two time Wynne Prize winner, is represented in all leading public collections and was recently honoured as an Australian cultural living treasure.  This show reveals all the signature elements of his oeuvre... a unique poetic vision of the outback.  Rarely representing places literally, Juniper is not so much as looking at the landscape, but is encompassed by it and hinting at the stories it might contain.

“I do not work directly in the open.  I like to travel around and gather impressions and ideas and things like that and later try to express them in, shall we say, a poetic sort of way, a distillation, semi-abstract”  Robert Juniper

This exhibition shows a familiar palette of gold-orange, lavender-blues and layer and layer of pigments scraped back revealing a sense of age and suggestive reminders of an indigenous people and their place.

“It is superbly ironic that creativity is such a private occupation, yet needs an audience to achieve some finality.”  Robert Juniper
