The sky often dominates Boyd Sanday's landscapes. Although usually an abstract and intangible subject, Sanday’s skies are monumental and "mountainous", influencing everything they cast their shadow or shine their light upon. Sanday's work is highly technical and emotive yet resists conventional romantic landscape genres. A predominantly grey palette embodies the ambiguities of the Australian landscape in contrast to more nostalgic ideals rendered by artists in the past, while his works’ small formats empower the viewer rather than glorify the artist and his or her subject. The recent body of paintings I have been making are based on my observations of Tasmania’s light and landscape. I’ve sourced the imagery over a five month period, camping and wandering the hills and beaches of the northeast hinterland and the south-eastern coastline... I no longer try to approach the landscape with the ideals formed by Australian colonial and Impressionist painters. I prefer to revel and meander in a plentiful land split asunder, the sublime through a haze of habitation. (Boyd Sanday, 2011)
