Paintings from the 60's & 70's

SOLD Apollo at the gates - c.1960's, Oil on Board, 10 x 10cm
James Gleeson is recognised as one of Australia leading and most important surrealists. During the 1960’s and 70’s he produced a series of small paintings depicting his distinctive imagery, that of an abstract, organic landscape, the percussor to the ‘psychoscape’ and the use of male nudes – well muscled men, in their prime, ideals of beauty and celebrations of masculinity.
These little paintings exude an almost prophetic atmosphere of ethereal light, a sort of ‘and God created Man’ statement – and yet they seem to also question the nature of reality.
