Patrick Shirvington

A Testament to the Hawkesbury

28th April - 24th May 2006

Drought, flood & cockatoo, Oil on Canvas, 110 x 134cm

When Shirvington paints plein-air, he has a direct response to the environment around him. There is an intimacy with the surroundings, generated by the experience, not just of the visual, but the stimulus of the other senses as well, by the temperature, wind, light, sounds and movement, for instance.

The artists response to all these stimuli are expressed and represented in these perceptive works, based around the bush, the gullies and creeks of the Hawkesbury and Colo Rivers.

With subtle colour, a strong sense of line and movement, Shirvington entices the viewer to consider, and, have a connection with, the landscape.

A Play on Words

An exhibition of bronze sculptures

Mouthpiece - 2005, Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture 10/15, 60 x 65cm

Sculpture today has no rules – anything can be used and explained.  Using the figure, however, requires a discipline and a skill that takes years to master.  Being a contemporary sculptor, Stephen likes to extend the boundaries of more traditional sculpture by overlapping the figures with modern aesthetics.  Stephens’ new bronze sculptures push the creative side of what is a very technical process.  He embraces sumptuous colours in patination not usually associated with bronzes.“I am inspired not just by the female form but by the images evoked by language and the ‘play on words’ – I am searching for my own form of beauty.”

Stephen emigrated from England to Australia as a professional sculptor in the early 1980's.  He relies heavily on traditional, classical precedents and careful anatomical observation.  Nevertheless, his figurative sculptures are executed with a refined elegance and beauty.

His work has been commissioned by numerous companies and collections throughout Australia and Asia including: Park Hyatt Hotel, Hyde Park Sydney, Hilton Hotels in Sydney, Adelaide, Shanghai, Seoul, Bangkok; Qantas; KPMG Sydney; Crown Casino, Melbourne; AMP; ANA Hotel, Sydney; Park Grand, Sydney; Park Land, Kuala Lumpur; Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur; St George Bank and numerous private collections.
